Competitive Trail Challenge (UAWR fundraiser)
I wanted to let you know about a big fundraiser that Under the Angel's Wings Rescue will be holding at the beginning of 2011 and wanted to let you know to "SAVE THE DATE".
We will be hosting a Competitive Trail Challenge (CTC) scheduled for January 29, 2011 in beautiful Phelan, Ca. We really need your help to make this CTC a HUGE success. Come for the weekend or the day... ride or volunteer... WE NEED YOU!!!!

Available Volunteer Positions
Horse Walkers:
All horse walkers must have previous horse experience. You must be calm, confident, and comfortable around horses. You must have the ability to walk, lead, and control a horse from the ground. You must be 15 years or older and be able to walk for up to an hour.
Stall/Horse Maintenance: NO horse experience is required. We always need volunteers to help out with cleaning stalls and grooming horses. We can teach you! You must be 13 years or older unless accompanied by an adult then most all ages are welcome.
Water Bucket Cleaning and Filling: NO experience needed. We need someone who can fill water buckets each day and who is detail oriented to ensure each horse has clean & full water bucket. You must be 13 years or older unless accompanied by an adult then most all ages are welcome.
General Maintenance: We are always in need of general maintenance/ handyman type work and repairs around the ranch. If you have these type of skills we need your help!!
Tractor Owner/Operator: If you have a tractor and can bring it over for even a few hours we are ALWAYS in need of tractor work and need your assistance desperately!!
Horse Exercising: We have limited openings for volunteers with horse experience but only experience riding beginner type horses. This would be someone with limited amount of riding skills. You MUST be able to groom, saddle, bridle, and ride independently without constant supervision though.
Horse Schooling: We are in need of volunteers with horse experience that are able to ride horses that are suitable for an intermediate or better rider. You MUST be an independent worker who does not need to be supervised constantly and know how to groom, saddle, and bridle a horse. (Custom Schedule to suit your needs is available, contact us for more info)
Volunteer Coordinator: We are in need of a volunteer who can manage and over see the volunteer program. You will be in charge of scheduling volunteers to come out and overseeing volunteer applications, etc.
Fundraising Coordinator: We are in need of someone who can set up and manage a fundraising programs for UAWR.
Newsletter: We need a volunteer who can organize and write a monthly newsletter that will go out to all adopters, donors, volunteers, supporters, etc to keep them up to date on what happening at UAWR.

My Ah Ha of the Day..
So today has been a whole ball of frustrations. My day starts with phone calls to Doctors, Pharmacy, and Visiting Nurse. As I am on the phone getting more and more frustrated because I am being told that I don't have any more approved visits from my insurance for the Home Nurse. What???? I am mid stream here and this Wound VAC (my electronic leech) MUST be changed every 3 days and ummmm they were here Friday so today is day 3 and no one is coming and I just find this out NOW???? My insurance only approved 3 times a week for 2 weeks. Did they REALLLY think that HUGE gaping hole was gonna be healed in 2 weeks? Come on now.....So now I have to sit here wondering what is going on with my ankle and if we are going to be heading backwards with my recovery cause some sorry sap cant do their job and be sure everything is in order so that i get the care I need, WHEN I NEED IT!!
So, as I am making myself lunch today and being frustrated at being stuck in the wheelchair and it takes twice as long to do anything. Then the frustrations of dealing with my insurance company who faithfully withdrawls their hefty sum of money from my checking account each month without fail who now is creating issues with me getting my medical care when needed. Thru my frustration though I had a HUGE epiphiny that OMG THIS is what those with life long disabilities go thru EVERYDAY for the REST of their lives. They live with the constant battle of how is this medical bill going to be paid, will my insurance approve this procedure, will I be able to get the care needed when I need it? Wait and wait and wait for people to return your phone calls and they NEVER do.... So is this a lesson in helping me to understand what these people go thru? Is this my lesson to walk in THEIR shoes for a few months and to understand the issues and problems of being disabled? I don't know but it sure did hit me hard while sitting there being frustrated!!! I felt this is part of the life lesson in proceeding forward with the BIGGER plan of Therapeutic Riding and funny part is in the end I sure could use it myself. I am here thinking what I would do to be able to go out and ride a horse right now. That sure would do my state of mind a whole lotta good right now! I imagine being one of my therapy students sitting at home waiting for the day of the week that I got to go and ride a horse. Wooow, what a highlight that would be to get out of the house and go do something of that magnitude. I sit here in their shoes thinking what joy and excitement of looking forward to riding horse must do for their whole inside. I own horses but even now if someone said next week you will be able to ride a horse, I would be counting the days, hours, minutes, and seconds until that time. I get it now, the freedom of being out of the wheelchair, the freedom of moving without crutches, and joy of movement without the use of a walker... ahhhhhhh the wind in my hair, the movement of the horse under me.....the fresh air, the sweet smell of horses, the feeling of gliding along the arena rail without a care in the world... I feel like I am on top of the world...ahhhhhhhh my heart sings and brings a smile to my face.....
Can you see it?? Do you picture it??? Can you feel it?? Ohhhhhhh I always have but NEVER had I been able to see it from THEIR prospective and THEIR point of view until now. Me having to completely rely on a wheelchair to get me from place to place has allowed me to have this perspective.... and there IS a purpose in that!!!
Thank you Lord for this humbling experience to allow me to see and feel what my students see and feel.
I TRULY GET "IT" NOW!!! ITS GONNA BE AMAZING!!!!
The best part is over this last weekend at our Disney Day I met a really great contact who I feel is going to help fill our book with students who are in need of therapeutic riding! I see the dream coming true now...slowly but I see it WILL happen and it's going to be AMAZING!!!

Disney Volunteer Day
Whhhew we made it thru the day. So most of you know that we have the privilege of being a part of the Disney's Give a Day, Get a Disney Day volunteer program and wooow this has been an amazing experience!!!
We generally have trouble getting people out here to help us out with clean up and other misc chores that are needed around the ranch and NOW we have hundreds of people who are wanting to come out and help out.
So, my original intention for today was to sign up around 40 people to come out and help and somewhere along the line I got carried away and signed up just a "few" more people and yesterday when I sat down to make my sign in sheet and actually count I said uhhh ohhhhhh I managed to schedule 81 people ....lol and we all realized I truly HAVE lost my mind while sitting here on bed rest.... lol Actually it turned out AWESOME we have a wonderful group of people and they worked very hard and got a ton of things accomplished. There ended up being a total of 70 people as we did have 11 no shows and I am just in awwww when I look outside to see how wonderful things are. I am excited we will be doing this again next weekend so we will get even more accomplished!! 
Its is so cool when the majority of people walk away from a hard days work and say Thank you I has SOOOO MUCH FUN!!!! We also got several really great contacts that would like to come back and help out again which is also a wonderful blessing as I need that more then anything at this time while I am down. I look forward to another fun filled weekend next weekend!!

Santa Comes to the Rescue
Well many things have happen over the past week that I wanted to share with everyone.
First I had 2 families step up to the plate and offered to each foster 2 horses each!! WOOOOW can you imagine my excitement when I found out that 4 of the 20 horses would have a foster home to care for them while I was recovering. That is a HUGE help to me and has helped to not only lighten the load around the ranch but it also serves as a winning situation for the horses too as they will be provided with more attention then possible for me to give them at this time. Thank you to The Paylen and Williams Families!
Then I send a HUGE thank you to Cecelia who sent me the most wonderful Christmas Card with a very touching letter and a very generous donation to help with caring for the horses also during my recovery.
Thheeeennnnnnnn Thank you to Kathy who first stepped up to the plate and made a wonderful and generous donation to the feed store for UAWR to use in order to help purchase feed needed for the horses. Kathy also writes for the daily press and wrote a beautiful and very touching article about the needs of UAWR. One of the things Kathy mentioned in her article was the need for a golf cart or motorized vehicle and Wooooo Hoooooooo I got the call!!!!!!
I got a call from a wonderful family in Apple Valley who is going to donate a golf cart to UAWR so that I can get around the ranch and over see the volunteers and ensure all the needs of the horses are being taken care of. This will also give me the ability to do some of the chores needed around the ranch myself such as watering horses and small tasks such as that. I am ever Soooooo grateful to Kathy for putting the word out and to the family who has donated to cart for UAWR what a HUGE blessing THANK YOU!!
I also received another wonderful donation from Nicol who is a previous adopter of UAWR and a wonderful woman who has been a great help to UAWR over the years and again has come thru to help out!!
Thank you to everyone I appreciate the help so much and hope that with all of us together we can continue on with UAWR even thru this tough time of a horrible economy along with my injuries, if we all work together I KNOW we can make this continue to happen!!!
